THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $300, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

Hi, Doll Parts

I am Crypto's sister Eliza. I have the following message for you to post. We do not have contact information for many of her friends. When you put up the post, I'll give a comment and let people know they can send stuff to me.

POST:

Crypto was very severely injured Friday, April 27 while trying to board a train in Innsbruck, Austria. Both legs have been amputated about 5" above the knee. She is in an induced coma. An additional operation is scheduled for Wednesday (tomorrow). The hospital she is in has a specialized trauma center and has very good equipment.

Her mother, Sally, will be flying out on Thursday and arriving on Friday. Her sister Magda will be out this weekend. We do not know if she will be conscious by then.

The Shiva Vista Project is an art installation *by* fire performers *for* fire performers at night and for other individuals and groups during the day. Shiva Vista will create an atmosphere for fire performers, theatrics, sunrise yoga, circus entertainers, poetry, fashion shows, etc. to play, interact, and display their talent six feet above the playa for all to see their evolution, their transformation from one year to the next. When the Shiva Vista is not being used for scheduled performances, it will be available to anyone to use for meditation, shade, drumming, as well as spontaneous fire art and beyond.

History and inspiration...
Shiva is one of three aspects of the Hindu trinity representing divinity. Brahma is the first aspect, considered the creator, Vishnu the second aspect considered the preserver and Shiva, the destroyer. Shiva's function is to destroy all the worlds at the end of creation and dissolve them into nothingness, void, from which point Brahma again creates the world, completing the circle of life. Shiva is responsible for change, both in the form of death and destruction and in shedding old habits to start anew. Shiva's destruction is positive, that of nourishment and construction that builds and transforms life and energy for the welfare of the world and all that inhabit it. Shiva destroys to renew and regenerate. This is the destruction of an artist, a surgeon, a cook; evolution. Through destruction is facilitated the smooth transition of things and events from one stage to another.

The Shiva Vista project represents the theme at Burning Man this year and the continued evolution of Controlled Burn and the Fire Conclave Convergence Camp in the sense that this installation is intended to be built this year and used over the next couple of years, facilitating change, evolution, the shedding of old and creation of new, recycling and the circle of all life. Additions to the original structure are in the design process and will be added for Burning Man 2008, at which time it will be burned as it was designed to do, fulfilling the inevitable departure from existence into nothingness and oblivion!

ok, this is not news, I realize...but still. the other day I am driving with my kid in the car and there is a merge going on where you have to get over or you're going on the freeway. so i put my blinker on in plenty of time, there is room for me to change lanes, and suddenly this asshat in a pickup truck races forward to fill up the spot so I can't get in it. I am almost forced onto the freeway, but barely get behind him just in time...to see TWO not just one but TWO large burning man stickers on the back of his redneck ass vehicle. one that is a big man. one that is a big man and says "IT's WORTH IT" holy crap. apparently it's worth it just to stare at tits, IMHO, because this man was such a jerk i double flipped him off right in front of my kid. at least i managed not to swear, unlike in this post. she still gave me the look. she's almost five, and she's already giving me the, oh mommy, you shouldn't do that, look. with eyebrows.

ok, I just had to get that off my chest. it happened like last weekend and I am still mad about it. I don't know why I still think people I like are the only ones that go to burning man. clearly that is not the case. in fact that is the whole point, or a lot of it, the whole radical inclusion thing and all. which means asshats are welcome too. the fuckers. well all I have to say to that is the event is supposed to change them, not the other way around, and dang it, he just does not get the point.

right then for my project for nowhere the euro regional in spain is to establish a post office. I will be making post cards that the citizens of nowhere can send to their friends all over the world, buying the stamps, even borrowing a camel to deliver mail on site, designing my own theme post man uniforms, including candy raver mailman, silver mail man now all i needs is post to deliver!!

there will obviously be internal festival mail, but everyone loves getting post especially if its not the sucky money draining or junk sort, but many of our participants at nowhere will be first timer randoms with no burner friends......yet, so i want to ensure that everyone gets post!! specially from people from all over the world so i'm asking my tribe and burner friends if they wanna participate.

so there is a lot of talk of censorship right now on tribe. i'm thinking that's a pretty strong word. if tribe wants to decide that it is family friendly, and doesn't want racy pics or text up on its boards then that is their choice. they get to decide who they want to be. it's hard to control who sees what, and if they can't be responsible for people coming across x rated images when that's not what they want, i say that's ok. it sucks, mind you, if it means the racy stuff just won't be out there on tribe, i agree with that for sure, but it's not censorship exactly. thoughts?

Dear Fellow Burners,

While preparing for my first Burning Man in 2004, I quizzed my
friend, a four year BM veteran, on every topic I could think of.
Eventually I asked, "Well, what about sex?". With playful eyes, but a
serious tone of voice, he answered me, "Helen, the Playa is full of
sexual energy." The opportunities for participation in this sexually
charged environment seemed vast, and upon my arrival I was amazed by
incredibly diverse expression of sexuality I observed in others.

Burning Man's sexual energy, almost palpable at times, is experienced
by each participant differently and has a unique relationship with
sexuality in life outside of the festival. Understanding the sexual
behavior, attitudes and relations (in other words the Sexual Culture)
present at Burning Man has become my intellectual pursuit, my academic
focus and one of the ways I choose to participate and contribute to
the Burning Man Community.

I have created a survey to better understand the sexual attitudes and
experiences of Burners themselves. Although a survey in no way can
capture the complete experience of even one individual, it will help
to give a voice to the Burning Man community, which to me is much more
valuable than assumptions or generalizations made by the media or
anyone else.

I humbly request not only your participation in this study, but your
assistance in moving this survey through the network of Burning Man
participants by forwarding this invitation email to other Burners that
you know.

Participation in this survey is completely voluntary and completely

BF Skinner and Burningman

Does anyone know about the connection between Walden Two (BF Skinner) and the ten principles of Burningman? They overlap quite a bit. In R. Nye's book, entitled The Legacy of B.F. Skinner, a nice interpretation of this logical psychologist's vewa are included and well worth reading.

For those of you not in the know, here are BF's ideas of what would make our commonity much more functional:
(a brief synopsis of his 'advice')
1) Childrearing should be communal
2) Education should be related to practical situations within the community
3) Work should be productive, with the expectation that ALL in the community provide a modest contribution
4) Leisure time is important and should focus more on doing than observing
5) Personal relations should be intimate and non-competitive
6) Sex roles should not be stereotypical or focused along traditional lines
7) Both young and old should be actively involved in the community life
8) 'Psychotics and retarded persons and others with special problems' (and it helps to have an understanding of his view on the 'disability model' and behaviorism to argue against this) should be cared for within the community, each having some useful and fulfilling role
9) Government works best when people behave respectfully for one another (and this would be facilitated by the above 8 principles), and if people have face-to-face interactions with one another in community, government's role is rarely needed.

Just a brief epiphany for my day!

Just felt like saying that since I really like her music and want/need to hear more and need to hear more music that anyone can provide.

Playacast is still online if anyone needs to hear some up beat music. Digicast will be somewhat more diversified but hey.....it's still the best thing to listen to with the computer connected to an awesome stereo.

(Digicast is making 8 channel digital surround sound HDTV/IPTV built into the mother board systems that will only be able to be viewed/listened to on Digicast custom built digital/computer receivers.)

Things are going exceptionally well.

Oh yeah,

If anyone wants to hear what is going on with Playacast right now, you can Google it as "Playacast" and click on "Playacast the vault of heaven." Yes it has some "Boom boom boom" but occasionally you hear some cool shit.

Digicast will have some way cool shit in a few days.

Post here what you think of Playacast. For some it may take a little time for the sound to download. It's made for high end equipment.

Suppressing Science

By taking over the Kansas school board "intelligent design" crowd has been able to set new standards for the teaching of science. The usual news sources tend to portray this as simply requiring that "intelligent design" be taught along with evolution. But there is more.

Effectively this is a religious movement to suppress science. The Kansas board has redefined science in such a way as to allow, perhaps even encourage, supernatural explanations of the world. Evolution is number one on the hit list, but number two is geology. The "young earth" crowd is hot on the heels of the "intelligent design" bozos.

If I had clout in colleges, I'd require remedial science education for anyone admitted from Kansas.

Note that this is all of a piece. Resident Bush has endorsed "intelligent design" (although he appears to be a counterexample). The administration policy is to suppress science in a wide variety of federal decisions. And this effort is slouching forward in other states.

Halloween is finally here. It is probably the most
celebrated holiday in the jamband world, giving New
Year's Eve a run for its money. Going back as far as
The Grateful Dead, jambands have traditionally played
epic shows on Halloween, busting out obscure covers or
covers of entire albums and digging deep for spirited
versions of old classics. Fans have also gotten into
the act, attempting to dress up in costumes resembling
the titles of their favorite songs.

Everyone must understand that dressing up in costume
is a once-a-year opportunity. If you dress up in
costume on any other day besides October 31st, people
are going to think that you are either weird, a
Renaissance Festival employee, or Michael Jackson.
Beside the point, Halloween costumes generally give
you the luxury of sneaking some contraband past
security. Pick a bulky costume that will afford you
the chance to cunningly hide a sandwich, four-foot
glass bong, or centrifuge on your person. Calmly
approach security, extend your ticket, say "Happy
Halloween," and you'll be well on your way to
separating red and white blood cells inside the venue.
Don't fear a possible search because venue security
will rarely mess with a guy in a green afro wig.

Choosing your costume is almost as important as
choosing your concert for the evening. A bad costume
can really kill your buzz. While you may think it's
rather clever to dress up like Chewbacca and poke fun
at wookies, you have to realize that you will be
sweating your ass off by the end of the night. If you
are driving to the venue on your own, this costume is
fine, but if you are bumming a ride, realize that no
one wants to be trapped in a car with your stanky
butt. No, your hairy wookie ass will be walking all
the way home to the Millennium Falcon. By the same
token, wearing lots of makeup is never a good idea
unless, of course, you are really ugly. Otherwise, by
the end of a sweaty night your bitchin' Marcel Marceau
costume is going to look more like Tammy Faye Baker.

Don't forget to think about your costume's
flexibility. I know you've been waiting until you're
old enough to go out on Halloween dressed as a giant
erect penis. Sure, your costume will be quite popular
as everyone will want to rest their drink on the two
enormous testicles at your waist. However, how much
fun will it be for you? Will you be able to dance and
move in your costume? Have you ever seen a giant erect
penis that can bend? Have you ever seen a giant erect
penis with two arms? F.Y.I., the answer is no. There
are no giant erect penises with arms-- well, at least
I have yet to see one. You don't want to start taking
artistic liberties and giving your penis two
mysterious arms. This will really confuse your
friends. They'll say, "Dude, great penis costume. Love
the testes—mind if I put my drink there? By the way,
what's up with the arms? Are they supposed to be
scabies or worms? Are you trying to tell us something
about yourself?" I don't think we need to go any
further here because Halloween is not the day to tell
your friends about your venereal disease. Listen up,
Buster Brown, get that giant erect penis out of your
head right this minute, and think about something safe
and flexible instead. Try being a slinky.

Alright, if you really want to have a shot at winning
the costume contest, and as a result, getting in on
the exciting group sex backstage, listen to me here.
It is absolutely vital that your costume make some
sort of clever allusion to the scene. You have to be
cutting edge; you can't just recycle an old idea.
Anyone can dress up like a Mounds bar, a Hood milk
carton, or Riker's Mailbox. However, we've all seen
the bootleg video of Phish's 1994 Halloween concert,
so you need to cover some new ground. Instead of
focusing on the obvious, such as wearing 32 things to
symbolize moe.'s "32 Things," make your costume more
esoteric. You want to make people think about your
costume before they get it, and since you'll be
surrounded by inebriated people, there's nothing more
entertaining than watching inebriated people trying to
think. Pick some unique piece of the jamband concert
scene to illustrate with your costume. For instance,
consider some of these possibilities:

- Dress yourself in florescent material. Jump around
and dive into people, repeatedly knocking them in the
face and back of the head. Not only will you be
popular, but everyone will be calling you "Glowstick."

- Wear a pair of The Empire Strikes Back pajamas. It
may take people a little while to get it, but
eventually, they'll be addressing you as "Clearchannel
Entertainment."

- Glue dollar bills all over your body, and walk
around, handing out flyers, postcards, and cans of
Spam. Force people to accept your gifts, and they'll
recognize you as "The Annoying Promoter."

- Make a huge papier-mâché head to wear on your
shoulders. Be sure that your head is so large that you
can't get it in the door. Congratulations, you are now
"Steve Kimock."

- Dress up as a eunuch. If anyone asks, just tell them
you are "Michael Kang's mandolin playing."

- Drape yourself with old Fraggle Rock and The Great
Space Coaster blankets. Tell people you are paying
tribute to "obscure covers."

- Get some fake blood, and run a constant stream
flowing from your ears. Hold your head in agony.
You'll probably have to explain to people that you are
"a sober fan forced to listen to The Disco Biscuits'
singing."

- Wear doctor's clothing and demand to give hernia
exams to all of the men you encounter. If you are a
woman, you will become instantly popular. If you are a
man, you will become instantly beaten. Either way,
people will recognize you as "Venue Security."

- Glue a bunch of tickets together into a cone
formation and then glue a few dollar bills to the
ticket cone. Face a wall, drop your pants, shove the
cone between your butt cheeks, and start screaming.
You may get a few strange looks, and you'll probably
get kicked out of the show, but it will be totally
worth it if you are recognized as "Ticketmaster's rape
of the consumer."

- Put on a pink negligee, and attach a Steal Your Face
button to it. Paint a fist-sized black circle on the
negligee near the center of you chest. Roll up a
dollar bill and start smoking it. It's going to
require some thinking, but surely someone will realize
that you are "the heartless pink slips delivered to
longtime employees of the Grateful Dead."

- Grab a 1980s Radio Shack cassette recorder, and hold
it up to tape the band. People will instantly
recognize you as "Analog Taper: The Man Whom Time
Forgot." You also receive bonus points if you lug a
reel-to-reel machine on your back. Of course, if you
are at a Phish show, this costume doubles as "The Man
Who Stepped Into Yesterday."

Whatever costume you may choose, make sure you have
fun. That's what Halloween is all about. Also, make
sure you wear pants, trousers, shorts, a skirt, or
something to cover your lower extremities. Halloween
is all about that, too. Trust me; I learned this the
hard way when I went out dressed as the "Dark Side of
the Moon."

well my peoples i have to say that was an awesome burn. i got to meet a bunch of eplayans and other board members, i got to fly in an airplane over the city, i got to work with the bureau of erotic discourse which was an awesome project, and a big success for its first year on the playa, i met some fabulous folks, saw some great art, played and ate and sang and danced and watched the wind go by. and go by it did, the week went by so fast, somehow even though i went earlier and stayed later it still just zipped right by...whoosh. but what a beautiful whoosh it was!

Burning Cow needs Ticket!!

Last two years I had to sell my ticket at the last minute due to family emergency (03) and flakey rides (04) after having worked on the temple project pre-burn. Haven't been sure about this year until last week when I drove one of the Temple trucks up with a load of wood, and my camp gear!! Now tiny beetle can get me there, but my ticket was passed on to another crew member since I was unsure. Anyone who knows of a ticket for sale, please call me ASAP. I have the cash (miraculous!). I'll be glad to come pick it up anytime day or night and take any tokens you'd like to send your friends on the playa along with me. I'm in the mood to make fun of BORG2. They just take themselves so seriously sometimes! Of course, I am a devoted constituent of the BORG2, but I still they need to be pranked. Anyway, someone needs to do SOMETHING to make the BORG2 lively again.

call for a/v submissions [AVit Retreat] techno_feminism collaborative

This is a call for audio/video for the techno_feminist collaborative project at
the 2005 AVit Retreat at Happy Ass Ranch in Colorado, June 13-17th, 2005.

If you wish to participate in this collaborative a/v effort please contact me
asap, with your name, phone, email, platform, and format of your audio/video.
Clips need to be submitted on the subject of women in technology by May 1,
2005. This is absolutely necessary in order to assure that we can format the
clips with the hex plugin for dome projection at the retreat. Please visit the

goodness gracious great balls of fire!

Hello all you crazy wild eplayans, i am back! I know, it has taken me absolutely forever to get back on the boards, but i am happy to report that the old wireless connection is up and running, and i am back in the zone. Yes, it took quite some time to decompress, recompress, and the decompress a little more (hard to get that big head through doors, you know how it is!) after my trip to Brazil! which was fabulous. so much so that from now on when i write the word Brazil! it must have an exclamation point all of its very own...yes, it was that good. in Brazil! i met lots of neat people from all over the world and got to see some of the amazing countryside, took a little boat trip with dolphins, rituals every day, totally profound and amazing in every way imaginable, and several i could never have wrapped my little head around until it happened to me, and believe me, i tried!

strangely enough they really seemed to like me, as obnoxious and loud and smelly as i was, and i felt rewarded and aknowledged for my individuality and the energy i bring - i got to spin fire in a traditional dedication ceremony, and sing an old irish sounding song too, and we even went to a really cool older lady's house on this island reserve, and she made us potato pancake sandwiches, and i really like Guanana a lot, it's a kind of soda.

so now i am back home, and that was really wierd, it was like who's car is this? do i remember how to drive? where am i!!! but after a while it came back to me, although i have mostly resisted the impulse to close back down and have remained idiotically open and full of life - don't try this at home! ha... and oh my gosh, i'm a mommy with responsibilities, and oh, as it turns out daily discipline isn't really my thing :) but oh well, it's all good, and at least now i get to hang out and make sand castles and play some, which helps balance things out a bit.

also, i am doing this fun theater thing with Fireball Improv, and our first performance is coming up next weekend, so i'm all excited and nervous about that, i'll post the info here as soon as i dig it out of my inbox...boxes boxes everywhere, fully still in which box is that mode, and how long ago did i move? oh my...well, i'll have to work on that!

so I just wanted to say hi, i am so not caught up on everything going on around here, but i promise i will make the effort, and have some scathingly pertinent, or at least impertinent, comment to make on nearly everything, as usual!

What's the deal with the deletion of the ePlaya thread? I got an invite from DVD to join this tribe along with an encouraging note to say hi to all the really cool folks who are here (aren't we, though?) I posted one message and the long thread in which it appeared immediately got deleted. What's up? Was it something I said? DVD, I think you owe us an explanation.
